CAMP HUMPHREYS -- The Camp Humphreys 2013 Operation Rising Star singing contest was held, in the Community Activity Center, Sept. 27. Operation Rising Star is Army Entertainment's vocal competition that showcases the talent of Soldiers and their eligible family members.
Program emcee Lorenzo Ranches, a recreation specialist at the Community Activity Center, said "This program provides opportunities to all Soldiers and family members who wanted to become a star before leaving their dream behind to join the military."
A total of 17 singers competed for the top prize of $500 and the opportunity to compete at the next level of the competition. Jameson Johnson, assigned to Company A, 719th Military Intelligence Battalion, said "It's (this program) really fun. It's a great thing that the Soldiers have an outlet to show their talents. My wife also participated in the show and I think she did great and also she had lots of fun."
After about two hours of entertainment, the winners were announced. First place went to Spc. Ikilya Davenport, assigned to Company A, 602nd Aviation Support Battalion, while second went to Sara Isom, a family member with 3-2 General Support Aviation Battalion. The third place finisher was Ariane Pardubsky, a family member with Company B, 602nd ASB.
Now that he has won at the local level, Davenport will advance to the 2013 Operation Rising Star competition, where he will compete online against winners from around the world. Following the online voting, vocalists will be invited to Fort Sam Houston Theater for a chance to win a custom recording experience. Following the ceremony, 348th Quartermaster Company won a closely contested Spirit Award competition, earning $300 for its unit fund.
