FORT BENNING, Ga., (Oct. 2, 2013) -- In a rematch of their first game of the season, the Fort Benning Doughboys and Faulkner University junior varsity team put up more than a 90 combined points for the second time this year, but this time it was the Eagles coming out on top, 53-42. The Eagles lost the first game to the Doughboys 56-42.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick lead 46 seconds into the game, scoring their first of four touchdowns in the first quarter while limiting the Doughboys to a single score on a 24-yard pass from quarterback Adam Gallagher of D Company, 1st Battalion, 29th Infantry Regiment, to Djaun Harrington of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion.
In the second quarter, the Doughboys cut the Faulkner lead to two touchdowns, scoring on a 1-yard quarterback sneak from Gallagher. The scoring play was set up by an interception from Doughboys' Demetrick Carter of A Company, 1st Battalion, 81st Armor Regiment, who returned the interception to the Faulkner 2-yard line.
After holding the Eagles to three-and-out, the Doughboys pulled to within seven points at 29-21 on a Gallagher 37-yard touchdown pass to Charles Bingham of E Company, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, with 12:06 remaining in the half.
The Eagles bounced back, scoring on a eight-play, 59-yard drive to extend its lead to 34-21.
Again, the Doughboys came back and pulled to within six points, scoring on another defensive takeaway with Nick Bryant of the 75th Ranger Regiment intercepting an Eagles pass at the Doughboys 25-yard line and returning the ball 75 yards for the touchdown and cutting the Eagles' lead to 34-28 with 3:23 remaining in the half.
Faulkner added one more touchdown before the half, scoring on an eight-play, 78-yard drive with 1:19 remaining in the half to go up on the Doughboys 41-28.
The Doughboys received the second half kickoff and made the most of their first possession of the second half by marching down the field on a nine-play, 71-yard drive culminating in a Bingham 8-yard touchdown run to pull to within 41-35.
After exchanging punts, the Eagles extended their lead to 12 points, scoring on a 2-yard run with 6:14 left in the third quarter, then added a field goal later in the quarter to go up on the Doughboys 50-35.
Bingham cut the Eagles' lead to eight points with 10 seconds remaining in the third quarter with a 2-yard touchdown run, which was aided by a Doughboy sack and fumble recovery of the Eagles quarterback at the Eagles' 30-yard line.
Trailing 50-42, the Doughboys missed a 31-yard field goal with 9:29 remaining in the game, and the Eagles connected on a 33-yard field goal to round out the scoring with the Eagles taking the win 53-42.
In all, the Doughboys and Eagles ran 198 combined plays from their run-and-shoot and spread option offenses.
"They (Eagles) played well," Doughboys head coach Josh Gibson said. "We played well, it was a great game and fun to be here. Offensively we had 42 points and still didn't win the game. But, we missed a lot of tackles, just really poor tackling."
Gibson said he knew the game was going to be a back and forth game, and even when the team was down early in the first quarter, he wasn't worried.
"Even when we were down 28-7, we weren't really worried," he said. "It was just we were missing tackles … it wasn't like we were being dominated and they were just blowing us up and down the field and vice versa."
Up next for the Doughboys is the Georgia Sports Prep Academy. Kickoff is 2 p.m. Sunday at Doughboy Stadium.
