BAMBERG, Germany (Oct. 1, 2013) - A bag left at Bamberg's main train station next to a public telephone at Luitpoldstrasse, led to a bomb scare and a large scale operation of emergency responders on Tuesday, October 1. Streets were blocked and traffic backed up for over two hours. Shortly after 11:30 a.m., the authorities were able to give the "all clear."
Around 9 a.m., a pedestrian reported the bag to the police station. A note attached to the bag, including the word "bomb," increased the threat level. The Technical Special Group (TSG) of the Bavarian state office of criminal investigation was pulled in and streets were blocked.
The police on site evacuated the area immediately and all Bamberg police forces, including the federal police, were called to the site. Aside from blocking Ludwigstrasse and Luitpoldstrasse, a nearby bank and another office building had to be evacuated of approximately 150 people. The trains running through Bamberg station were not affected.
Experts of the TSG examined the suspicious item. After a thorough inspection, no dangerous materials or dummies could be located in the bag, which contained only clothing.
The Bamberg police are now investigating the case. Their focus is to identify the individual who deposited the bag. Specifically, the Bamberg police are searching for the answers to the following questions:
- Who saw suspicious persons in the area around the public telephone at Luitpoldstrasse?
- Who witnessed the disposal of the bag?
- Who has knowledge about any other details?
