SAN ANTONIO (Sept. 24, 2013) -- Personal health and fitness took center stage at Friday's U.S. Army Installation Management Command town hall.

"You need to take of yourself," said Command Sgt. Maj. Earl Rice, Installation Management Command, or IMCOM, senior enlisted adviser, to Soldiers and civilians gathered for the event. "The amount of work you do every day and your focus every day to take care of Soldiers, families, our Gold Star Families, and our wounded warriors means you have to have a high level of energy to get out there and get it done."

Rice encouraged civilians at the IMCOM headquarters monthly meeting to focus on taking care of themselves and recognized team efforts to become a healthier workforce.

Audience members clapped and cheered as Rice shared stories of individuals losing weight, reducing their blood pressure and body mass index.

"PT (physical training) is low cost and high impact," said Rice.

His sentiments were authenticated with hard statistics from Karen Perkins, the director of Human Resources for IMCOM, who spoke about the command's wellness program.

"There was an average of five pounds lost for each person," said Perkins. "People's blood pressure went down, which is a really great thing."

Perkins stated 758 individuals graduated the six month wellness program, losing a total of 4,129 pounds across IMCOM.

To increase participation in the IMCOM headquarters monthly resiliency fun walk and run, IMCOM is changing the route length to accommodate all fitness levels. Starting in October, there will be routes for a 1K, 3K, and 5K walk, jog, or run.

Rice said changes to the fun walk and run are due to feedback from an employee.

"It's about taking it one step at a time," said Rice regarding becoming healthier and he hopes more people will participate next time.

Before the town hall ended, Lt. Gen. Mike Ferriter, IMCOM commander, stressed the importance of saying "thank you" and praised the IMCOM team for its dedication and support of the Army Family.
