YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea -- A few Soldiers of HHC, USAG-Y and spouses of army officials visited the Yongsan-Gu office building and, with the women's association of Yongsan, made songpyeon for ROK soldiers, Sep 17.

Songpyeon is a traditional Korean dessert that is usually hand-made with the help of friends and family and shared amongst neighbors during the holiday.

The Women's Association and the spouses of army officials differ in the language they speak, but through the work of making the treat they created a bond that broke the language barrier. Karen Masley, spouse of Col. Michael. E. Masley, garrison commander for U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan, shared her thoughts.

"I really had a good time. The people from THE women's Association taught us very nicely, even though we do not speak the same language," Masley said. "Today's experience was very meaningful since the songpyeon we made will be sent to the Soldiers who [all] deserve to have many more things. The songpyeon will be just a small gesture, but I hope the soldiers know the great amount of gratitude that lies inside."

Seong Jang Hyeon, the chief of Yongsan-gu office, visited the volunteers to express his appreciation for their work, and gave thanks to those who participated.

"When I served in the Army, people brought some songpyeon around Chuseok and it worked as a fuel to endure the hard times," Seong said. "I thought that the making of these songpyeons and bringing them for the soldiers in the Yongsan garrison would be an unforgettable memory that Soldiers could cherish. I think that today's event has met the original intent and so I thank all the spouses, soldiers and women's association [members] for making this a successful event."
