(VICKSBURG, MISS.) September 16, 2013: The Lower Mississippi River Museum has been named a Southern Travel Treasure by AAA's magazine, "AAA Southern Traveler". The Lower Mississippi River Museum also received a certificate for the designation which the Vicksburg Convention and Visitors Bureau will present to Col. John. W. Cross, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District, on Wednesday September 18th at 10:00 am.

Featured in the Sept./Oct. 2013 issue of "AAA Southern Traveler," Lower Mississippi River Museum was selected as a Southern treasure for its appeal to typical AAA members. "AAA Southern Traveler's" popular Travel Treasure series is part of each bimonthly issue. "AAA Southern Traveler" circulates to more than 260,000 AAA homes in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. More than 70% of readers choose the South for their vacation destination.

"We sincerely appreciate this prestigious and richly deserved designation from "AAA Southern Traveler." The Lower Mississippi River Museum and Riverfront Interpretive Center's interactive exhibits engage the visitors in a study of the river that is both entertaining and educational," said Bill Seratt, executive director of the Vicksburg Convention & Visitors Bureau. "It is a tremendous addition to our menu of tourism attractions."

Ground was broken for the museum in 2009. The concept began in 1995, when the city purchased the retired MV Mississippi I for $1. The title was returned to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 2007 when the vessel was slow-rolled down Washington Street to the museum site at Washington and Jackson streets. The museum opened on August 24, 2012 and has welcomed over 15,000 visitors.
