YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea (Sept. 18, 2013) -- The Eighth Army commanding general thanked the Korean people for their continued support on the eve of Chuseok, Korea's autumn harvest festival.
In a message, Eighth Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Bernard S. Champoux wished his Korean allies a happy Chuseok.
Similar to Thanksgiving, Chuseok is celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar. The harvest festival traces its roots back to antiquity. More than 30 million Koreans return to their ancestral homes during Chuseok, which will take place Sept. 18-20 this year.
The Eighth Army commander also encouraged American military personnel to enjoy the holiday.
"I encourage our Soldiers, civilians and families to share in the Chuseok tradition by reconnecting with their families, spending time with our Korean allies and enjoying traditional Korean food," said Champoux.
Champoux thanked his Korean allies for their enduring friendship and hospitality.
"For our gracious, kind and generous Korean friends, I wish you all the best during this important holiday," said Champoux.
"I also thank you for supporting our alliance and the men and women who serve in it," said Champoux. "It is an honor and a privilege to serve in your country and experience your culture."
