CAMP HUMPHREYS -- With no rain in the forecast, the Labor Day Let Freedom Ring Celebration at Soldier Field, previously scheduled for Independence Day, went off without a hitch Sept. 2. Besides the usual activities, such as inflatables, eating contests, music, children's games, and face painting, children and adults were able to participate in the Child, Youth and School Service's NFL Punt, Pass and Kick Competition.
Also, AFN Osan brought the Eagle to the festivities and conducted a live broadcast during the first couple hours of the event. "The weather turned out to be nice and we are enjoying being out here with our kids," said Elizabeth Gayton, whose children, Chris and Teddy, participated in PPK. "They just love football whether it is watching or playing." The PPK competition was open for youth and adults beginning at 10 a.m. There were age groups starting at the very young (6-7) and for the not so young (49-50). There was also a team competition for adults.
Another highlight of the day was the "Minute to Win it" competition, where the winner received two tickets to anywhere in the United States. Participants were given a mission with just one minute to complete it. Whoever finished the mission survived the round and moved on to next level, until finally one person remained. "I did the watermelon eating contest, (which was) the first round of minute to win it, to have fun myself and share a fun moment with my friends," said Sgt. Allen Betancourt, assigned to Company C, 602nd Aviation Support Battalion.
Weather wouldn't be the only hindrance to putting on this event, if not for those who volunteered their time. "Family and MWR would like to thank all those who volunteered their free time to help make the Labor Day Celebration a successful event," said Aubrey Kiemnec, the special events manager for Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation. "Their assistance is critical to pulling off all the activities."
Although families were having fun during the day, the highlight of the event was still coming after dark. Just before 8 p.m., the first of 20 minutes of fireworks could be seen above the northern side of Desiderio Army Airfield.
