In keeping with Army tradition that Senior Command authority normally lies with the senior general officer on the installation, Headquarters, U.S. Army Materiel Command assumed the Redstone Arsenal Senior Command role from Aviation and Missile Life Cycle Management Command, July 31.

AMC Commanding General Gen. Dennis L. Via made the announcement during a Team Redstone Board of Directors meeting, Aug. 29.

"This transition is a natural progression now that the command is firmly rooted at Redstone Arsenal," Via said.

According to Via, AMCOM's leadership as the Senior Command enabled Redstone Arsenal to grow and become what is now a nationally recognized Department of Defense and Federal Center of Excellence. AMCOM's support as AMC transitioned to Redstone allowed the command to focus on supporting the Warfighter while moving roughly 11,000 employees.

"I thank AMCOM and Maj. Gen. Lynn Collyar for many years of exceptional leadership, teamwork and achievements across Redstone Arsenal and within our Huntsville, Madison and Madison County communities," Via said.

AMC is leading a phased transition of associated responsibilities from AMCOM which leaders expect to be transparent and seamless to the public and tenant organizations. In the next few months, AMC will become responsible for synchronizing and integrating Army initiatives and establishing installation priorities.

Other responsibilities include tasks such as overseeing base operations support, chairing the Installation Planning Board, and serving as the senior Installation representative in surrounding communities' activities and events. As directed by the Department of the Army, HQ, AMC will execute the responsibilities of Senior Command through the AMC Deputy Commanding General, Lt. Gen. Patricia McQuistion.

"This transition will only serve to strengthen a truly exceptional partnership with our communities," Via said. "My intent is to build upon the foundation built by AMCOM, and showcase the capabilities of Redstone Arsenal and the greater Tennessee Valley area at the national level."
