8/20/2013 - FORT EUSTIS, Va. -- Members of the Warrior Transition Unit at Fort Eustis, Va., attended a town hall meeting Aug. 15 with leadership from both the McDonald Army Health Center and the WTU to address their healthcare concerns.

Held quarterly, the WTU town hall meeting is designed to facilitate interactions between the company-level command team and the Soldiers in transition assigned to the WTU. During the meeting, Soldiers were able to discuss concerns with leaders from MCAHC, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, 733rd Mission Support Group and the Soldier and Family Assistance Center.

U.S. Army Col. Glenda J. Lock, MCAHC commander, expressed her desire to support the healing process for Soldiers in transition assigned to the WTU.

"As the commander of [MCAHC], I maintain open lines of communication with Soldiers in transition to ensure we are fully addressing any healthcare concerns or administrative issues they may experience during their transition," Lock said. "Their issues may not arise or be addressed during our normally-occurring meetings or venues. Having open lines of communication with them will ensure they have access to me."

In addition to a direct line of communication with the health center commander, transitioning Soldiers can also provide positive and negative feedback to command leadership at the company and garrison level.

"Any and every unit in the Army needs and deserves open communication; however, with the WTU and the triad of care we provide for the wounded, ill and injured Soldiers, it is imperative that communication flows up the chain as well as down to the Soldiers in transition," said U.S. Army Capt. Erika Wall, WTU commander. "The town hall [meeting] allows the Soldiers to voice their comments and questions to the appropriate agency handling their transition, whether it is medical-board related, or deal with facilities or Army and Veterans Affairs programs."

Following the open forum, Wall opened the floor to other WTU leadership who briefed Soldiers about the WTU Adaptive Sports Program, as well as information on the benefits offered to them by the Wounded Warrior Project.
