FORT BENNING, Ga., (Aug. 14, 2013) -- While it has been a while since I have been able to get back to where I began, it was refreshing to be on the football practice field during last week's Doughboys football tryouts.
After all, covering sports at Fort Benning in the mid-1990's is where my long journey began in this profession.
So, what was refreshing about being out in 90 degree heat sweating?
Probably being around a group of guys all dedicated to making a football team.
While the Doughboy prospects knew not everyone would make the team, it didn't stop the intensity of the workouts nor did it stop them from putting forth their best effort.
Talking with several of the prospects, each had a different reason for trying out for the team.
Reasons ran the gamut from wanting to be a part of something special, to rekindling being a part of the game and the love of football.
Coach Jason Gibson is the epitome of a professional coach.
As I spoke to him Friday, his love of the game, and the Soldiers of Fort Benning was apparent -- his enthusiasm was more than evident.
Although his new approach on how to coach this year's team may be a little different for him, it reminded me of a parent's role in mentoring their own children.
Not only does he want each and every player to succeed, he wants them to succeed doing it the right way -- and to be accountable to themselves -- and the team.
It's easy to see why players like playing for, and putting forth their best effort for him.
With a good group of returning players from last year, a new offense and a new coaching philosophy, how far will the players be able to carry the team and him?
One can only wonder.
But, I believe his goal, and several of the returning players goals of posting an undefeated record, could be within reach.
The team is talented, intelligent, and from what I have seen, is very driven to make this season one of the best for the Fort Benning Doughboys.
While no one knows how players will respond when they put the pads on Aug. 20, what I do know is the Doughboys will leave it all out there on the field each and every game.
Their record? That's why they play the game.
