FORT SILL, Okla. -- The Army is focused on ensuring their Soldiers are safe. Safety is stressed during training exercises, equipment operation, even during long weekends and while on leave. Sometimes leadership takes the same approach time after time and the overall safety message can get lost. The 31st Air Defense Artillery Brigade command team and safety manager thought of a new fresh way to get the safety message across.

"We decided to have a safety poster contest because Soldiers always have safety briefs, and it's usually from higher ranking Soldiers to lower ranking soldiers," said Michael Monroe, 31st ADA safety manager. "I wanted to give all Soldiers the opportunity to learn more about safety, and get some junior enlisted Soldiers to make safety posters on topics they want to discuss with their peers."

The contest focused on summer safety, and the creator of the winning poster received a four-day pass and certificate of achievement.

The winner of the contest, Spc. Kalyn Lagunsad, E Battery, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Air Defense Artillery, said she hopes her poster on fireworks safety will help keep the numbers of fireworks related incidents down.

"I hope this will keep people from lighting their house on fire," said Lagunsad. "I have a friend who lit her car on fire because of fireworks, and I hope that doesn't happen to anyone else."

Lagunsad added that she wasn't trying to cover just a portion of fireworks safety, and that she wanted everyone to be aware of the dangers fireworks can pose.

"I wasn't necessarily trying to get a certain message out, I just want people to be careful with fireworks because I've had some accidents with fireworks."
