HANNAM VILLAGE, Republic of Korea - Eighth U.S. Army leaders toured a leased housing area July 10 near Yongsan Garrison in Seoul.
Installation Management Command-Korea and U.S. Army Garrison-Yongsan officials gave a Hannam Village tour to 8th U.S. Army Commander Lt. Gen. Joseph F. Fil, Jr. and Command Sergeant Major Robert Winzenried.
The leaders stepped inside the Hannam Village Commissary and Shoppette before touring vacant low-rise and high-rise apartments.
IMCOM officials said it was an opportunity to let the senior mission commander see the situation on the ground first hand.
"This was our chance to let General Fil see the situation on the ground and to understand what we're doing to enhance the quality of life for our community members," said USAG-Yongsan Commander Col. Dave Hall.
Also leading the tour was Col. John Uberti. He assumed command of IMCOM-Korea at a July 2 ceremony at Yongsan Garrison.
Officials discussed plumbing issues, renovation proposals and options to improve the Hannam Village housing area.
Near the end of the tour, General Fil approached two community members walking through a parking lot with young children.
Jennifer Heatherly told the group that she likes living at Hannam Village.
"There are a lot of little things that make it more convenient," Heatherly said. "Everything is close together, like the library and commissary."
Briana Tillman agreed, but added that they would like to see more Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation programs.
"I understand that the community size probably doesn't support it," she said, "but I would like to see dance and gymnastics classes at Hannam Village."
After the tour, Lt. Gen. Fil said he had seen what he needed to see.
"Let me know what I can do to help," he said.
Hannam Village is leased from the Korean National Housing Corporation. The installation has a chapel, sports field, Army Community Service office, and an outdoor swimming pool, as well as a small commissary and exchange. The housing area was constructed in the 1980s.
Many enlisted servicemembers and junior-grade officers reside at Hannam Village and work at nearby Yongsan Garrison.
USAG-Yongsan officials meet with Hannam Village residents quarterly in town hall meetings to hear about issues and solve problems.
