FORT SILL, Okla. (July 18, 2013) -- Service members, their families and civilians attended the third annual Military Appreciation Family Fun Day and Car Show July 13 at Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area.

The purpose of the event was for the Lawton Chamber of Commerce members, their families and the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation to give back to service members and their families for the dedication and contributions that military personnel have given to our country.

Nearly 40 vehicles were displayed in the car show that was hosted by the Fort Sill's Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers program and the 168th Brigade Support Battalion.

The vehicles competed for awards in several categories. The main categories were Best of the Show and the People's Choice. The car show also had a burnout contest and loudest stereo competition, giving drivers the chance to showcase something they usually don't have the opportunity to do in public.

Staff Sgt. Ryan Thomas, the 168th BSB support operations noncommissioned officer, has been conducting the car show for the last three years.

"The turn-out for the car show was outstanding. It was more than I anticipated," he said. "This year's car show was in a better location than the last year's." The 168th BSB will be in charge of the car show next year, and they are looking for it to being bigger than this year's show.

Besides noticing all the nice shiney vehicles at the event, the celebration also had things for the kids to enjoy, including swimming, watercraft activities, miniature golf, water slides, rock climbing wall and inflatables all free.

"This year's event was a better turn-out then the last one I came to," said Richard Small. "The car show had a good set-up. There was free food and drinks and they made sure everyone was squared away by bring cold drinks around."

There was also a free lunch from noon to 2 p.m., which was catered by the Patriot Club. The lunch included hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, lots of water and sports drinks.

About 3,500 people came out and supported the Military Appreciation Family Fun Day and Car Show this year, making it the most attended car show on Fort Sill to date.

The event was sponsored by Lawton-Fort Sill Co-Op: A Community of One, AT&T, Morris

Motorsports, USA Discounters, Lawton Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge, Freedom Furniture and Electronics, Harris Jewelry, The Ross Group Construction Corporation and Goodyear.
