WASHINGTON (Under SecArmy Public Affairs, July 15, 2013) -- Maurice "Mo" Stewart says his promotion to colonel in the U.S. Army is the result of the enduring support from his family, friends, mentors and the extraordinary Soldiers he's served with for more than two decades.
Under Secretary of the Army Joseph W. Westphal hosted the promotion ceremony and praised Stewart, his current military assistant, for his dedicated service in defense of the nation. He recognized Stewart's critical role as a proven leader as he promoted him to colonel during a ceremony conducted before friends and colleagues at the Pentagon.
"Promotion to colonel is a significant milestone in our Army and represents the zenith of an outstanding military career. Colonels are vital to the success and management of our Army and this promotion speak volumes about Mo Stewart's professionalism, work ethic, and character," Westphal said during the ceremony.
Stewart recognized the support of his mother, Etta Stewart, and thanked his family and mentors for their enduring support.
"This is promotion is only possible because of the support and mentorship that I have received throughout my career," Stewart said after being promoted. "I truly appreciate the opportunities I've been afforded and look forward to my continued service to our nation."
During the ceremony, Westphal explained how the Army carefully selects its officers, and that this accomplishment is testimony to Col. Stewart's leadership as well as the support from his family.
Stewart ended the ceremony by recognizing his former colleagues in attendance for their role in his professional development and thanking Under Secretary Westphal for the unique opportunity to serve as his military assistant.
"I look forward to the challenges ahead and I'm excited to be a part of a great team," concluded Stewart.
Stewart is a native of Ozark, Alabama, and 1986 graduate of Carroll High School. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration-Management from Alabama A&M University, a Master of Science in Administration from Central Michigan University, and a Master of Arts in Computer Resources and Information Management from Webster University. Colonel Stewart has served in command and staff positions throughout the U.S. Army. Prior to his recent graduation from the U.S. Army War College, he served as the Product Manager, Acquisition Business, within Program Executive Office, Enterprise Information Systems (PEO EIS) at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
