No one likes change, but chicken biscuits help. On Monday, June 24, 2013, the Northern Regional Medical Command G-1 (Personnel) section welcomed the new Assistant Chief of Staff for Human Resources (ACHSR), Col. Jacqueline Chando, with a breakfast of biscuits, bagels, cereal and assorted fruits and berries.
Chando comes to the command from the Pacific Regional Medical Command and Tripler Army Medical Center where she served as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Human Resources and Troop Commander from 2011 to 2013.
"Col. Chando brings with her the professional skills and talents that senior Human Resource Managers significantly contribute to the General Staff team," commented Ms. Lisa Weatherington, the Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff for Human Resources. "She is a bright, developed leader and ready for the challenges in this most difficult region.
The occasion also honored the leadership of Weatherington, who is no stranger to those challenges. She served as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Personnel in the old North Atlantic Regional Medical Command from 2000 to 2002 and again as the acting ACSHR from November 2012 to June 2013. During that period the region experienced significant and unprecedented tests of knowledge, skill and mission execution. "Sequestration occurred in January 2013 and the Civilian [Human Resources Branch] was faced with new missions, [including] responses and implementation of furloughs for more than 6000 civilian employees, possible reductions in force and a MEDCOM-wide hiring freeze," said Weatherington.
"[Her] performance is stellar," said Sgt. First Class Ashley Simpson of Weatherington. "How she does her job has motivated me to work harder and learn as much as I can about Human Resources."
"She's a phenomenal leader. It's one of the most stressful times than anyone could deal with because you're dealing with peoples' livelihoods. It's not something anybody wants to deal with but we all have to take our marching orders," agreed Chando.
For her part, Chando is well aware of the challenges facing the G-1 section and the region. "We're so close to the flagpole. This region has more visibility and sensitivity in regard to our Warriors and how we care for them and our families. I always said that caring for our Warriors is the most sacred mission we have no matter what we do, whether you're an HR specialist, medic or provider."
The breakfast also gave Chando the opportunity to recognize outstanding work as she presented awards to three members of the G-1 staff. Ms. Oleatha Welbon received a Superior Civilian Service Award, Mr. Donald Cid received a Commanders Award for Civilian Service and Capt. Kenneth Roberts received an Army Achievement Medal.
"It was a pleasant surprise to see that and I was appreciative that I had such a warm welcome and to see how we take care of our staff. It's nice to begin on such a good note with the awards."
"And you can't go wrong with a chicken biscuit," she added.
