SUWON AIR BASE -- Medics from the 6th Battalion, 52nd Air and Missile Defense Battalion and the Republic of Korea's 10th Fighter Wing demonstrated their abilities to respond to, evaluate, treat and evacuate casualties in a chemically-contaminated environment, here, May 23. Conducted during 6-52's weekly Sergeant's Time Training, this is the first time the unit has included its ROK counterparts in the exercise.
"Uniting both forces only makes us stronger," said Pvt. Justin Hughbanks, an assistant medical case manager with Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 6-52. "This shows that we are united and can overcome anything, no matter the challenge." Before the simulated chemical attack, the medics prepared their equipment and rehearsed their duties several times while wearing protective gear.
"Everything we did was repetitive," said Pfc. Lauren Feick, a patient administration medic with HHB. "We practiced putting on Mission Orientated Protective Posture suits in case of a chemical attack. We also practiced treating and evacuating a casualty." Treatments included wrapping wounds, applying tourniquets to both arms and legs, and clearing obstructed airways, to name a few, before strapping the causalities to a stretcher and loading them into the back of a tactical ambulance. Once out of the contaminated area, further medical assistance was rendered.
