BAMBERG, Germany (May 30, 2013) -- U.S. Army Garrison Bamberg honored its dedicated corps of volunteers at the 2013 annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony May 21 at the Warner Conference Center.
Organizations from across the installation honored volunteers in three categories with certificates of appreciation and gifts.
Spc. Daniel Koss and his wife Christina Koss were jointly named Volunteers of the Year. Spc. Koss, a Soldier with 106th Finance Company, logged more than 300 hours in service to his unit, while his wife logged more than 500 hours as the Family Readiness Group activities chair and as a soccer and basketball coach for 3- to 5-year old children on post. They were presented with an electronic picture frame, engraved glass tumblers and other mementoes of their time in Bamberg.
"I wish more people would get involved," said Christina Koss. "It helps people stay busy and feel like they're a part of the whole planning process. We did lots of fun stuff."
The Koss family is in the process of moving to Baumholder, where Christina Koss will continue her service as the family readiness group leader.
Dr. Beverly Joiner, deputy to the garrison commander, knows the significant role volunteers play in the community.
"Bamberg is a great place to live, work and serve, and our volunteers make it even better. They take time away from their personal lives and invest that into other people," Joiner said. "They volunteer because they simply want to make a difference in our community."
