Army G-4 Logistics, in collaboration with U.S. Army Materiel Command (AMC), today released "Shaping the U.S. Army's Industrial Base in Wartime and Peacetime" a pamphlet outlining how the government-owned Depots and Arsenals will transition in the next 10 years.
"Our vision for the organic industrial base is a modern, reliable, cost-effective and highly responsive enterprise that meets both wartime and peacetime requirements," says Under Secretary of the Army Dr. Joseph W. Westphal.
For the past decade the Depots and Arsenals have been working in overdrive, repairing and producing Warfighter equipment. Last year the Deports repaired 119,000 pieces of equipment, a 13 percent increase from the previous year; and in the last 10 years, Arsenals manufactured 9,900 mortar systems, 4,700 howitzer cannons, and hundreds of thousands of critical repair parts.
As budgets decline and the Army transitions to a peacetime environment it is vital to preserve the critical capabilities of the Deports and Arsenals. The pamphlet describes how the Army will shape both the workforce and capabilities, including modernization, capacity alignment, capital investment improvements, and resource alignment. Also the Army is calling for more Public-Private partnerships, where industry can make use of the Army-owned facilities.
The pamphlet is based on the 10-Year Strategic Plan that was recently developed by the G-4, AMC, and the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics, and Technology.
