SEOUL (May 21, 2013) -- The Eighth Army commanding general received the South Korean Order of National Security Medal here, Monday.

Republic of Korea National Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin awarded the medal, also called the Gukseon Medal, to Eighth Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. John D. Johnson for his accomplishments during his time in command of the U.S. Army's top operational formation in Korea.

The award ceremony at the Republic of Korea, or ROK, Ministry of National Defense was attended by ROK Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Jung Seung-jo; United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command and U.S. Forces Korea Commander Gen. James D. Thurman; and Deputy CFC Commander Gen. Kwon Oh-sung.

According to the ROK Ministry of National Defense, Johnson contributed greatly to safeguarding peace and stability on the peninsula in response to a variety of provocations, including North Korea's artillery shelling of Yeonpyeong Island, its long-range missile launches and a nuclear test.

The ministry said that Johnson also successfully managed many issues facing the ROK-U.S. Alliance, including the eight-month joint investigation into the erroneous claims that Agent Orange was buried on Camp Carroll in 1978.
