Sgt. Maj. of the Army Raymond F. Chandler III awards a track and field gold Sgt. Monica Southall on May 14, 2013 during the 2013 Wounded Warrior Games at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.Southall won gold medals in the standing discus and standing shot put. Chandler and his wife spent the day on Tuesday meeting, encouraging and speaking to athletes taking part in various events. Southall said she appreciates the support of the Army's highest enlisted NCO."It speaks volume to have him out here supporting us. We need all the support we can get. Leadership being out here shows us how much they support us,"Southall said.

Puertas said receiving the medal from the Army highest ranking NCO was an honor. "Having someone that category come down here to see us compete means a lot to me. And, I'm sure it means a lot to other competitors," he said. "It definitely shows that we don't leave a fallen comrad even after they have recovered."
