SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. - Col. Garrett S. Yee, deputy commander for mobilization for Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, pinned on the rank of brigadier general today during a ceremony at Scott AFB, Ill.

Maj. Gen. Thomas J. Richardson, commanding general of SDDC, officiated the ceremony.

"I never aspired to become a general officer - I just wanted to do my part," said Yee.

Yee assumed duties as deputy commander for mobilization, Dec. 14, 2012.

"This month is Asian American Heritage Month. As a descendent of Chinese and Japanese parents, I find it inspiring to see how far we have come, especially given the challenges my parents lived through. As Japanese American farm workers, my mother and her family were ordered to an internment camp in Arizona during World War II. My father was told he couldn't become a school teacher because he was Chinese. My parents would have never imagined an Asian American would reach the rank of general, let alone their son," Yee added.

His military career began in 1987 when he received his commission in the Infantry upon graduation from Santa Clara University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Combined Science. His civilian education also includes a master's degree in Business Administration from Golden State University.

Yee's military education includes the Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Combined Arms and Services Course, Command and General Staff Course, Military Police Advanced Officer Orientation Course, the Support Operations Officer Course, Ordinance Officer Branch Qualification Course, Battalion/Brigade Pre-Command Course, and Advanced Joint Professional Military Education Course. He also holds a Master's in Strategic Studies from the Army War College.
