Soldiers from the 168th Brigade Support Battalion took advantage of the weather here May 3, by getting out of their offices and onto the golf course.

The mini-golf course to be exact.

Rather than have a normal "thank you" ceremony for the volunteers of the battalion with a quick dine and dash, Soldiers and family members went out and explored Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area here, playing a round of mini-golf to allow for fun and relaxation after a busy work week.

"This was a great opportunity to recognize our volunteers for all that they do and to have a little fun," said Lt. Col. Mark Mays, battalion commander.

Throughout the 18 holes were questions about Fort Sill resources that were available to Soldiers and their families here. Soldiers who answered questions correctly could golf with their normal club and ball. If answered wrong, the golfer would have a more challenging golfing experience, ranging from using a pool noodle as a club to wearing a blindfold and sometimes having to use a small deflated football instead of their normal golf ball.

"It wasn't exactly my best score for the year with all these crazy handicaps thrown in, however it was extremely entertaining to watch everyone else try their hardest, especially with this wind," said 1st Lt. Sharonda Humphreys.

"We decided to hold the event out here at LETRA because many of our newer and even some older Soldiers and families are unaware that it is out here. So many times today people have come up to me saying that this area is amazing and that they had no idea that it was here," said Denise Tribble, the battalion's family readiness support assistant.

"We put out questions on each hole so the Soldiers could learn about the area and also so we could use these random toys as penalties," said Tribble.

Following the golf, the battalion recognized their top three spouses by thanking them and presenting them with awards. The spouses have worked on numerous projects such as gift wrapping during Christmas and organizing family days.

"This has been a really great opportunity to have these families come out and together thank the volunteers who worked so hard this past year," said Tribble. "These volunteers have stepped up and done some great and wonderful thing for the battalion, Fort Sill and the Lawton community."
