<b> FORT STEWART, GA </b> -- Single, senior Soldiers assigned to Fort Stewart will soon have new quarters available to them, thanks to a new construction project that former Director of Public Works, Mike Biering describes as "following in the spirit of the Army Family Covenant."
The Army Family Covenant was signed in November 2007 with goal of improving the quality of life for Soldiers, their Families and the community. Biering emphasized that housing is definitely one of the areas that affect the quality of life, and many of the new construction projects underway at Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield relate to the Covenant, even if not directly funded by it. One of these construction projects is taking place on about 30 acres and will eventually create about 370 beds spaces for single senior Soldiers. Biering said another 20 acres are available for further development.
"The Army provides the land but incurs no costs for the construction," Biering said. "We wanted to provide single, senior Soldiers on the installation facilities that offered them as good or better amenities than they could find off post."
Biering referred to Balfour Beatty, the construction company that recently acquired GMH Military Housing, as Fort Stewart's development partner. Some of the amenities that will be found in the new campus-like facilities include individual parking lots, private storage, swimming pool, car wash and community house. Rather than pay security deposits and high rent for an off-post apartment and still drive long distances to work, senior enlisted Soldiers and junior officers will have the option of living on-post. Their only costs would be their basic allowance for housing, which they would essential give up to live on-post.
Biering said the first unit for the new single senior Soldier housing should be ready to occupy around the end of this year. In addition to this housing project, he said 36 housing units for married, senior enlisted Soldiers have recently been completed, and new barracks for single, junior enlisted Soldiers are being built on Stewart that will provide for over 300 beds.
Balfour Beatty is a London-based engineering, construction and investment company that recently acquired GMH Military Housing. Biering recently was promoted to the position of Deputy Garrison Commander. Vic Maulden is currently acting as Stewart-Hunter's DPW.
