FORT BRAGG, N.C.- The Warrior Transition Battalion held its Adaptive Sports Day, April 5, on its campus off Normandy Drive.
The event provided an opportunity for subject matter experts to brief wounded warriors about the resources available to them as WTB members.
Staff Sgt. John Elmore, of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, who is an 18-year, Army veteran, seemed to understand the importance of the sports day events.
"It brings awareness of what is available as far as activities for the disabled who really weren't aware of wheelchair basketball, archery, tai chi -- not aware that we (WTB) do provide that now," Elmore said.
"Our whole goal is to get these guys out of the barracks and get them to the recovery stage," said Lee Whitford, WTB reconditioning adaptive sports coordinator.
He welcomed attendees including the Fayetteville Flyers, Ride 2 Recovery and Warrior Rides to the event.
"This is a community-based effort," Whitford said. "In the future, the WTB hopes to move forward with sitting volleyball and sitting basketball, recreation activities that hasten recovery for wounded warriors."
For Tee Foster, an Army veteran who was paralyzed in a humvee accident at Fort Hood, Texas in the early 90s, wheelchair basketball helps wounded warriors rehabilitate and find a balance, while offering life lessons as well Sports teach a person to go on with life, not to give up, he said.
