Fort Huachuca, AZ. - Caring for a Family member with special needs, especially severe chronic medical conditions, is an around-the-clock job. There may be no end to a caregiver's love, but everyone who shoulders such responsibilities needs a break to rest and recharge.
EFMP respite care provides that break. Qualifying Families are eligible for up to 40 hours of respite care a month for each for enrolled Exceptional Family Members depending on the specific needs of that EFM.
"Taking care of an individual with special needs is often a 24-hour job, and respite care allows the primary care giver some time to take care of their own needs, as well as recharge their batteries," explained Audrey Peterson-Hosto, Exceptional Family Member Program manager, adding that "respite care is flexible in the fact it may be provided inside or outside of the home."
"In the recent past there was a waiting list for those requesting Respite Care Services," said Peterson-Hosto. "However, over the last couple of months we have had several respite care recipients PCS to other installations, and currently we do not have a waiting list."
Army life poses challenges for any Family, but especially for Families with special needs. "It is part of our job, our commitment to the Army Family Covenant, to make sure we are delivering the right services in the right way to support the health and well-being of all Family members," she said.
