EAST LANSING, MI -- A Michigan State University student has started the process of becoming an Army physician by accepting a scholarship through the U.S. Army. Brittany Fetterolf, a Midland , Mich., native, was selected to receive the F. Edward Hebert Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship, which she will use to attend medical school at Michigan State University's College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Fetterolf enters medical school this summer following in her brother's footsteps. "My older brother is currently in the Army and he is about to graduate from medical school from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He has had very positive experiences so far." Second Lieutenant Brandon Fetterolf was commissioned in 2009 after accepting the same scholarship before entering medical school. The Fetterolfs will both be promoted to the rank of captain upon graduation and entering active-duty in the U.S. Army.
HPSP covers 100% of tuition costs for students entering medical, dental, veterinary or optometry schools. Students receiving the scholarship also receive a monthly stipend of more than $2,000 and can be reimbursed for books and fees associated with their education. According to Fetterolf, the decision to accept the scholarship was an easy one.
"I was fortunate enough to have a wonderful recruiter who was able to get me in contact with many Army physicians, including female physicians, which was very important to me," Fetterolf said. "Everyone whom I spoke to gave me very positive feedback. This really helped shape my decision. I am very excited to begin my experiences in the Army, as it is a good way to both serve our country and defray the costs of medical school. Overall, it is a perfect win-win situation."
Fetterolf was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army Reserve on the 8th of February 2013, by Capt. Mike Knight of the Lansing, Michigan Army Medical Recruiting Center.
"It is always an honor to recognize the dedication and potential of someone willing to serve their country," Knight said of the occasion. "I'm sure that Fetterolf will make an outstanding health care provider for Soldiers and their Families."
"I am looking forward to caring for the children of Army Families and I am looking forward to the camaraderie in the Army family." Brittany Fetterolf states regarding her goal, after finishing medical school, of becoming a pediatrician.
