National Disability Employment Awareness Month

What is it?

Each year, the month of October is celebrated as National Disability Employment Awareness Month to remind both employers and job seekers alike of the employment contributions and needs of individuals with disabilities.

This year's theme, A Strong Workforce is an Inclusive Workforce: What Can YOU Do? is meant to emphasize how our workforce can be improved and be strong when we all work together to ensure we are inclusive of individuals with disabilities.

What has the Army done?

The U.S. Army Wounded Warrior Program provides support for Soldiers and veterans who were severely wounded, injured or became ill while serving their country. The program assists and advocates for these Soldiers, regardless of their location or their recovery/rehabilitation timeline.

The Army also provides disabled employees with support while increasing the number of individuals with disabilities hired through programs such as the Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP). The WRP is a recruitment and referral program that connects federal sector employers nationwide with highly motivated postsecondary students and recent graduates with disabilities who are eager to prove their abilities in the workforce through summer or permanent employment.

What continued efforts does the Army have planned for the future?

In addition to increasing the public's awareness of the contributions and skills of American workers with disabilities, the Army will continue to support events that recognize the contributions of disabled employees, and encourages the entire Army family to publicly honor their contributions by planning and executing appropriate commemorative activities to celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Why is it important to the Army?

As the number of wounded Soldiers continues to grow after more than 11 years of sustained conflict, Army senior leadership remains committed to both the belief that disabled does not equal disqualified and the recognition that advantages exist in hiring disabled veterans and civilians with disabilities.

Employers who hire people with disabilities find they have tapped into a talented, skilled, and diverse pool of workers, who often bring a unique perspective of diversity to the workplace. When a workplace is welcoming of people with disabilities, employers gain needed skills and new perspectives on ways to confront challenges and achieve organizational success, while making the workforce stronger and more inclusive. Employees with disabilities gain dignity, respect and self-determination. Most importantly, society as a whole benefits from a culture where every person is valued for his or her contributions.
