Theater Trauma System

What is it?

The Theater Trauma System is a joint system with a mission to improve trauma care delivery and patient outcomes. It is an organized, coordinated effort and defines continuum of care as an integrated system of all events, phases, roles and intensities of trauma patient care including prevention, point of injury, pre-hospital care, patient movement and hospitalization.

What has the Army done?

As part of the Army's Campaign of Learning and the Army Medical Department's integration into the FY12 Army Experimentation Plan, the Directorate of Combat and Doctrine Development, AMEDD C&S, conducted a Theater Trauma System workshop in May 2012. This workshop was a facilitator-led discussion which utilized Phase II thru Phase IV of the Joint Phase Model to reevaluate the Combat Support Hospital (CSH) Force Design Update (FDU) evaluate the Forward Surgical Team (FST), En route Critical Care (ECC), and Advanced Trauma Management (ATM) future concepts. The workshop focused on answering AMEDD Learning Demands and analyzing ways to mitigate capability gaps in the Theater Trauma System. Additionally, the workshop assessed Medical Mission Command to determine timely situational awareness and the effectiveness of health service support (HSS) assets in an operational environment. The workshop validated the ATM, FST, ECC and re-validated the modular CSH concepts.

Why is this important to the Army?

Today's Army focus includes not only Army Health System support of major combat operations but also stability or defense support of civil authorities operations. The high tempo of future operations will increase demands quickly, requiring modular medical capabilities able to scale rapidly and remain adaptable to specific mission and theater requirements. The ability to provide a flexible trauma system adaptable to a fluid operational environment will ensure sustained synchronization with evacuation assets, positive patient outcomes, and the ability to push resuscitative surgical care to where it is needed.

What efforts does the Army plan to continue in the future?

The way ahead is twofold:
1) Outcomes and insights will be integrated into the medical support plan of TRADOC Army 2020 simulation exercises (SIMEX).
2) Resulting concept issues will be further evaluated by the respective Integrated Process Action Teams.
