Quantities of fuel consumption on the battlefield are quite high. And every time you need to get fuel to the battlefield, it takes Soldiers away from their mission. So not only are you taking them away from their mission, you're putting them in dangerous situations. Anything we can do to cut down on those numbers of convoys, cut down on that dependence on the fuel, frees up Soldiers so that they can be doing their job, doing their mission.

National Guard Virtual Diversity Conference

What is it?

In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday, the National Guard held its first ever Virtual Diversity Conference on Jan. 18, 2012. This conference was livestreamed by the National Guard. The 1-hour virtual conference was accessible to Soldiers, Airmen, and civilians from all 50 states, the territories of Guam, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia.

What has the National Guard done?

Via live video stream technology, the chief of the National Guard Bureau, General McKinley, and a team of presenters delivered a strategically important diversity message to the global National Guard family. General McKinley and key members of the Joint Diversity Executive Council proclaimed the value of embracing diversity and inclusion in the workplace and throughout our formations. In preparation for the conference, the National Guard produced a 58 page leader's guide complete with policy and motivational material. General McKinley emphasizes in the preface, Diversity and inclusion is about creating National Guard teams where everyone is included, engaged, and passionate about accomplishing the mission. What does the Army National Guard have planned for the future?

The National Guard plans to conduct future virtual conferences on a wide variety of topics. The next diversity conference is planned for September 2012. The Jan. 18 conference and future similar conferences will be posted on the National Guard YouTube page.

Why is this important to Army National Guard Soldiers?

In a resource-constrained environment, virtual conferencing is a cost-effective method of communicating across a large and diverse organization. The National Guard policy on diversity outlines four key points:
(1) Mission Readiness: The success of National Guard federal, state, and community missions depends upon the contributions of the men and women who have volunteered to join our force.
(2) Change Management: Our forces reflect the rapidly changing demographics of our nation and will demand a more inclusive approach to leadership and followership.
(3) Cultural Awareness: Diversity includes differences in characteristics, backgrounds, attributes, and experiences, requiring a culture that fosters absolute respect for all people regardless of rank, function, or position.
(4) Level of Engagement: Members must be prepared to serve in a multicultural world.

The National Guard of the future belongs to a new generation of adaptable Airmen and Soldiers. Our legacy is to entrust an organization that is free of barriers so all members can be successful as they push the flywheel and maintain the momentum of a great organization.
