National Disability Employment Awareness Month

What is it?

National Disability Employment Awareness Month is a time the Army expresses its sincere gratitude for the many years our nation and the Army have benefited from the contributions and achievements of persons with disabilities. From our disabled veterans and civilians throughout our Army, to our Soldiers returning as wounded warriors, these men and women have overcome physical and personal difficulties and display the courage and resiliency we continue to build in our Army today.

In addition to increasing the public's awareness of the contributions and achievements of workers with disabilities, the month is meant to raise awareness of specific ongoing efforts to increase hiring of individuals with disabilities. The 2011 national campaign theme is Profit by Investing in Workers with Disabilities.

What has the Army done?

The Army continues to provide disabled employees with support while increasing the number of individuals with disabilities hired through programs such as the Workforce Recruitment Program (WRP). The WRP is a recruitment and referral program that connects federal sector employers nationwide with highly motivated postsecondary students and recent graduates with disabilities who are eager to prove their abilities in the workforce through summer or permanent employment.

What continued efforts does the Army have planned for the future?

The Army will continue to support events meant to recognize the contributions of disabled employees, and encourages the entire Army family to publicly honor their contributions by planning and executing appropriate commemorative activities to celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Why is it important to the Army?

The Army recognizes that individuals with disabilities successfully serve as logisticians, engineers, accountants, personnel managers, strategists, warriors and many other of our professions proving that they are more than capable of accomplishing any mission. They valiantly and unselfishly play a vital role in protecting our freedoms and deserve every chance to pursue the American Dream. We encourage everyone to raise awareness and give individuals with disabilities an equal opportunity to excel as we continue to profit by investing in their abilities.
