TODAY'S FOCUS

Capability Developer of the Year Award

What is it?

A program implemented by Lt. Gen. Michael A. Vane, Director of the Army Capabilities Integration Center (ARCIC) to promote and award innovation that improves and maximizes efficiencies in developing capability development products. This program applies to the TRADOC and non - TRADOC concept and capability developments community of practice.

What has the Army done?

Nominees for the award demonstrated outstanding leadership, innovation, flexibility and overall excellence in accomplishing their concept and capabilities development duties. This summer, senior leaders in the community of practice nominated several talented and dedicated professionals for the award. Lt. Gen. Vane convened a review board comprised of several ARCIC senior leaders to consider and score the nominations with Vane making the final selection. Lt. Gen. Vane presented the first Capability Developer and Team Developer Awards on Dec. 2, 2008, at the Capability Developer Leader seminar. The Capability Developer of the Year award was presented to Mr. Jackie Funk, leader for the Army Maneuver Support Command Center (MANSCEN), and the Capability Developer Team of the Year was awarded to Ms. Janet Jennings, Mr. Jeremy Vigna, Mr. Eugene Cantrell and Mr. William Durham of the Aerial Layer Network Transport Capabilities Development Team.

Why is this important to the Army?

Concept and capability developers are responsible for identifying, assessing and documenting changes in doctrine, organization, training, materiel, leadership and education, personnel and facilities that produce force capabilities and attributes prescribed in force concepts. Their role has increased in support of the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and in the development of the future modular force to combat global extremism in an environment of persistent conflict. The Capability of the Year program will reward and motivate capability developers in their support of the Army.

What's planned for the future?

ARCIC will be soliciting nominations for the 2009 Capability Developer of the Year program in mid 2009. The next award will be presented at the fall 2009 Capability Developer Leader Seminar.
