Make a Difference Day
What is it?
Saturday is "Make a Difference Day," a national day of helping others that recognizes neighbors helping neighbors. America's largest day of doing good deeds is celebrated every year on the fourth Saturday in October. It was created by USA Weekend Magazine, and good deeds done on this day can be entered into a competition judged the following spring by USA Magazine. Newman's Own donates $10,000 to the charities of each of 10 national honorees selected during the judging process. These 10 honorees are spotlighted in the April issue of USA Magazine, which coincides with National Volunteer Week.
What has the Army done?
Army Volunteer Corps is a part of the Army Community Service program that helps you find volunteer opportunities and learn more about volunteerism in your military and civilian communities. Soldiers, civilians, retirees, spouses and youth provide service in schools, in hospitals, on sports fields, and in many other organizations and offices. Through their dedicated service, volunteers transform military installations into communities.
On last year's "Make a Difference Day," 192 military volunteers from Presidio of Monterey, Calif., came together to landscape, paint and clean five properties. They used $3,500 worth of donated supplies to help the homeowners, one a disabled veteran and two military widows. This project was one of the 2007 grant winners; $10,000 went to benefit "Rebuilding Together, Monterey, Calif."
Why is it important to the Army?
National holidays recognizing volunteers remind the nation how valuable volunteers are both in and outside of the Army community. The military would not be what it is today without Soldiers volunteering to serve. On July 1, 2008, the nation marked 35 years of the armed services made up solely of volunteers. On this day, Secretary of the Army Pete Geren said more than 1 million active, Guard and reserve Soldiers, more than 200,000 Army civilians, and more than 600,000 Army family members have made the all-volunteer force a success and the envy of the world.
