The Army TT Mission: A Team Effort

What is this? The Army Training and Transition (TT) Team mission is the embedded advisor team program which trains and mentors Iraqi and Afghan military units at all levels in theater. The Army has made the Training and Transition (TT) team mission a top manning priority. U.S. Army Human Resources Command (HRC) is working to man these teams with our most qualified active Army officers and NCOs.

What has the Army done? Initially, all TT Soldiers were sourced to theater either internally by units already deployed there, or tasked as individual augmentees. In spring 2006, the Army determined that the criticality of the TT mission mandated a more extensive TT selection and training process. The 1st Infantry Division was charged with equipping, training, and deploying Soldiers as TT teams; HRC was given the mission to select and assign Soldiers to teams under Permanent Change of Station (PCS) options. Soldiers assigned to a TT inprocess and train for 10-11 weeks at Fort Riley. Upon completion of initial training, TT members then deploy through Kuwait for additional regional preparation before assuming TT duties in a specific theater of operation for up to 12 months. A typical TT tour for an active Army Soldier typically lasts about 16 months.

What can Soldiers expect from TT assignments? Soldiers can expect that a TT assignment will benefit them both personally and professionally. Training another nation's Army in a combat environment offers Soldiers valuable leader development opportunities in both basic branch competencies and multinational, multicultural, and joint operations. These broad experiences are essential to developing the multiskilled leaders the Army needs for the future. Successful completion of a TT tour can only enhance a Soldier's career. The Army G-1 and HRC have instructed boards to specifically consider the importance of Transition Team assignments in reviewing officer and NCO files for promotion.

Why is this important to the Army? A principal objective of the U.S. National Defense strategy is to "strengthen alliances and partnerships." Our Coalition and American Military Transition Teams (MTTs) and Embedded Training Teams (ETTs) who assist, advise, support, and train the armies of Iraq and Afghanistan are key to achieving this objective and a more secure region. In executing this historic mission, the Army is counting on Soldiers to show up for TT duty, and leaders to help ensure they get there. Deployability for a TT assignment is crucial. Because TTs arrive, train, and deploy as squad-sized elements with specific training report dates and deployment dates into theater, the loss, no-show, or late arrival of any one designated team member makes that team combat ineffective before it even begins training. Our theaters of operation need teams trained and ready to deploy on time at 100 percent. The only way we can achieve this is with the support of Soldiers and leaders.
