WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

TODAY'S FOCUS

Center for Army Lessons Learned (CALL) and Lessons Learned Integration (L2I)

What is it? CALL at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, has the mission to collect, analyze, disseminate, integrate, and archive the Army's lessons learned. To enhance this mission, CALL has developed and instituted a collaborative, networked lessons learned integration (L2I) process that connects TRADOC centers and schools with units in combat and units training for combat. This program has yielded significant successes and expanded proponent lessons learned and issues resolution processes to TRADOC and the operational army.

What is the Army doing? In 2006, CALL placed dedicated military analysts in all TRADOC schools and centers and in selected corps and divisions. This is in addition to the existing observation detachments in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, and the combat training centers. Their purpose is to enhance rapid information sharing and facilitate integration of best practices and issue resolution across the Army in the doctrine, organization, training, materiel, leadership and education, personnel, and facilities (DOTMLPF) areas. The effectiveness and value of this process has resulted in the rapid integration of lessons into the institutional and operational Army.

What is this important to the Army? Some examples of changes that have occurred as a result of this emphasis on lessons learned are:

-Addressing Iraqi advisor issues relating to team selections, mission training, command relationships, survival training, and manning
-Validating and refining the requirement for a maneuver company-level operations and intelligence cell
-Streamlining the "pushing" of classified and unclassified information on improvised explosive devices to appropriate proponents and operational units.

These necessary readjustments triggered by today's continuously changing operational environment, have "bubbled-up" through lessons learned processes and are being addressed by the Army leadership.
