SENIOR LEADERS ARE SAYING

Too often we focus exclusively on those of us wearing uniforms, but I will tell you that all of you recognize full well that it's much, much more than that. We need, in many instances, to do a better job than we do today in recognizing all the families, spouses and supporting agencies that reside inside our Army and all their components.

TODAY'S FOCUS

The Scholarships for Military Children Program

The Defense Commissary Agency and the Fisher House Foundation have teamed up to offer educational scholarships to children of military families and retirees.

The Scholarships for Military Children Program was created to recognize the contributions of military families to the readiness of the fighting force and to celebrate the role of the commissary in the military family community.

The Scholarships for Military Children Program is funded through the generosity of manufacturers and suppliers whose products are sold at military commissaries, worldwide. We encourage military families to take advantage of their commissary benefits that not only provide a savings of more than 30 percent on the products purchased, but also support the military community through programs such as this scholarship. The purchase of products from these companies funded the 2005 scholarship program.

- The Scholarships for Military Children Program is marking its sixth year.

- The goal is to provide at least one $1,500 scholarship for each of DeCA's 268 commissaries worldwide.

- Authorized applicants include unmarried children under age 21 of active duty, Guard or Reserve, or military retiree families, Robinson said. Applicants may also range up to 23 years in age if they are enrolled in school.

- Application forms for the program will become available in November for pick-up at commissaries worldwide and for download via the Internet at www.commissaries.com or at www.militaryscholar.org .
