We are not losing sight of the fact that it is our Soldiers who put it all on the line and our families who are bearing the burden, and we are doing everything in our power to support them.
Gen. Peter J. Schoomaker
Chief of Staff of the Army
FM 1: THE ARMY
FM 1 is one of the Army's two capstone doctrinal manuals; the other is FM 3-0, Operations. FM 1 states what the Army is, what the Army does, how the Army does it, and where the Army is going. It establishes the Army's operational concept and other fundamental principles for employing landpower in support of the National Defense, and the National Military Strategies. FM 1 is also the Army Chief of Staff's vision for the Army.
FM 1 was rewritten to ensure that the Army doctrine captures the realities of the new security environment, and to ensure that the doctrine reflects new organizations, based on current Army transformation efforts.
In the foreword of the document, Gen. Schoomaker highlights four key elements of FM 1.
1. FM 1 establishes the fundamental principles for employing Landpower; most importantly the Army's operational concept and the fundamentals that support it.
2. FM 1 describes the American profession of arms, the Army's place in it, and what it means to be a professional Soldier.
3. FM 1 discusses Army contributions to the joint force.
4. FM 1 talks about Soldiers, the centerpiece of all Army organizations.
Over the next four days, Stand-To will feature details of each of the four key elements as outlined by Gen. Schoomaker.
