Operation Tribute to Freedom

Faces From the Front for March 22, 2010 - Spc. Guadalupe Heredia

Specialist Guadalupe Heredia

Current Unit: 158th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion
Current Position: Human Resources Specialist
Component: Arizona National Guard
Current Location: Kandahar, Afghanistan
Hometown: Lompoc, Calif.
Years of Service: 7

Spc. Guadalupe Heredia has spent the majority of the last two years proudly serving her country overseas with the Arizona National Guard. Currently in Kandahar, Afghanistan, Heredia, a human resources specialist, coordinates the rest and recuperation schedules for the Soldiers in her battalion.

"It is really important because it gives the Soldiers a break from the combat zone and an opportunity to see their loved ones," Heredia explained of her work.

Heredia, who also served as a human resources specialist last year, during her deployment to Baghdad, Iraq, has found some key differences in her level of responsibility during this deployment.

"My last deployment was a lot different than my current deployment. I was with a company that tracked over eighty Soldiers, and now I am at a battalion level, tracking roughly 1,000 Soldiers in various human resources areas."

Although Heredia has far more schedules to coordinate this time around, she is proud to provide this important service to such a large number or Soldiers, and ensure that each is able to take a much needed break and spend time with their families.

During her spare time in Afghanistan, Heredia enjoys running.

"I have had many rewarding experiences during my deployment, one being the opportunity to get back into running. Recently, I ran a half marathon for the first time," the Soldier said.

Heredia will return home to Goodyear, Ariz., near the end of 2010. She looks forward to spending time with her mother and siblings in Lompoc, Calif., and her son.

"I want to spend as much time with my son as I can when I return home. I want to catch up on the many things I've missed while I've been away. They are only kids once, and I want to cherish that," Heredia said.

In addition to visiting with her family, Heredia plans to return to school and earn her x-ray technician associates degree.
