Vilseck junior Meraleigh Randle tightened her lips and smiled, "I'm just a happier person when I'm shooting." These are comforting words coming from rifle-wielding high school students, who despite their age, are collected and serious about their craft.

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany -- As the snow falls in Garmisch, a service member couple on vacation at the Armed Forces Recreation Center, Edelweiss Lodge and Resort cozy up to the fireplace and enjoy a glass of wine after a great day. Another family who is on R&R leave from Iraq is relaxing in the hot tub after a sightseeing tour to the famous Neuschwanstein castle. Outside the resort, the kids are enjoying making a snowman with their dad who just returned from a long deployment.

When my wife and I moved here from Honolulu more than two years ago we were more than a bit concerned about one thing: winter. Sure, we could handle cold, but Bavarian cold? And after four years in Hawaii, we weren't even sure if we knew what cold was anymore. As expected, the first winter was brutal -- long hours of darkness, digging our car out every morning -- but since then we've learned the best way to deal with the elements is to embrace them.

According to the Department of Health, the most reliable and repeated New Year's resolution is losing weight. After all, when the holidays are in full swing, so are our bellies, and thighs, and … well, you get it. An alarming 62 percent of active duty personnel are overweight or obese, according to Kim Waller, director of the Grafenwoehr Army Wellness Center.

As part of last year's Ecological Project for Integrated Environmental Technology Project, the U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden DPW Environmental Division is getting rid of the electrically powered water reservoir aeration system at the irrigation pond at Rheinblick Golf Course and replacing it with a windmill aeration system.

Deciding the right words to say to a child was a topic of discussion from Dec. 3-5 at the Edelweiss Lodge and Resort in Garmisch, Germany, during a Deployed Spouses Retreat where 15 spouses from the 527th Military Police Company, 709th MP Battalion., 18th MP Brigade, created a strong bond to work through common struggles regarding the deployment of their loved ones.

While Soldiers from other partner nations routinely train at the U.S. Army Europe's 7th Army NCO Academy in Grafenwoehr, Germany, this is the first time a U.S. Soldier has attended a foreign NCO Academy.

Items purchased overseas in Germany at local U.S. military facilities or on the economy with a Value Added Tax form are duty and tax-free. As a result, there are restrictions on giving these items as gifts to local nationals and other people not authorized privileges, including sending gifts back to stateside Family and friends.

In 1918 on the 11th hour, the 11th day, of the 11th month, Germany signed a peace agreement which ended all hostilities of World War I. It was once called Armistice Day. Now more commonly known as Veterans Day, we honor and remember our fallen comrades of present and past wars. The 529th Military Police Company, 95th MP Battalion, 18th MP Brigade, had the honor of providing a color guard for the Croix Rouge Farm Memorial ceremony Nov. 12, near the memorial site.
