    Ten miles into the first day of a field craft training exercise dubbed "Mungadai," the formation led by Lt. Col. James M. DePolo, commander of 1st Brigade Special Troop Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, and Command Sgt. Maj. Andre H. Saintval, senior enlisted adviser, halted as it came upon battalion medical noncommissioned officers who prepared the second class of the day: proper foot maintenance. The timing was perfect, as it soon became apparent that some of the 35 officers and NCOs in the formation were experiencing severe blisters and other ailments.

    If any Soldiers are not sure how Maj. Gen. Stephen J. Townsend, Fort Drum and 10th Mountain Division (LI) commander, feels about marksmanship, his message is clear. "There will not be another division in the Army that shoots better than us," he said. Townsend and Command Sgt. Maj. Rick Merritt, division senior enlisted adviser, presented the 10th Mountain Division Marksmanship Award streamer to D Company, 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, and C Troop, 1st Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, during an awards ceremony Friday for being the first units to successfully achieve the division's new marksmanship standards.

    GHAZNI PROVINCE, Afghanistan - Soldiers from the 6th Khandak, 3rd Brigade, 203rd Corps Afghan National Army added 60mm mortar systems to their entourage of armaments and receive assistance from Soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment on how to operate their new equipment, 7 July 2013. The 6th Khandak mortarmen were already well-versed with firing systems of other variations; this light and highly mobile system allows them to shoot, move and communicate with improved haste.     FORWARD OPERATING BASE THUNDER, Afghanistan -- TOA: a Polynesian word for "warrior." This could not be a more fitting word for members of the Cross Functional Team Warrior, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (LI), after the transfer of authority ceremony, or TOA, held Feb. 13 at Forward Operating Base Thunder in Paktya Province, Afghanistan.

  • 10th Mountain Commander Congratulates Cadet at Boston Marathon

    West Point Cadet Johannes K. Olind (left) is greeted at the finish line by Major General Mark Milley, Commander of the 10th Mountain Division, at the conclusion of the April 16, 2012 Boston Marathon. Olind, a native of Canton, Mich., was one of 16 cadets and 4 officers from USMA to compete in the event. The 21-year-old junior completed the 26.2 mile course in 3:02.21, finishing 633rd out of nearly 22,500 participants. MG Milley was in Boston as part of the Army's Community Connect outreach program.
