  • Cold weather symposium heats up Fort Drum

    Fort Drum is known, and feared, for its often harsh winters. That is part of the reason Fort Drum was classified as a zone seven (arctic) base in early 2015. The change opened doors to new extreme cold-weather clothing and equipment for Soldiers as well as respect within the arctic community. It also led to Fort Drum hosting the 2016 Extreme Cold Weather Symposium, Jan. 26-28. The symposium is in its fourth year, typically held at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, and focusing on the needs of Soldiers stationed there.

Sgt. Maj. Wardell B. Turner, 48, from Nanticoke, Md., was assigned to Headquarters, U.S. Army Garrison, Fort Drum, N.Y., before deploying to Afghanistan in late 2013 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Turner was killed Nov. 24, 2014, when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device.

    When Col. Thomas Macdonald joined the Army in 1985, Lt. Gen. Stephen J. Townsend and Maj. Gen. Jeffrey L. Bannister were both lieutenants, Command Sgt. Maj. R. Ray Lewis was a young specialist, and a new light infantry division, the 10th Mountain Division (LI), was in its first year of service at Fort Drum. Thirty years later, during a 10th Mountain Division Mountain Salute Retirement, all four men would be in the same room as Townsend traveled from Fort Bragg, N.C., to Fort Drum to preside over his former chief of staff's retirement ceremony Sept. 28.

    When Edward Goodreault retired from the Army in 1970, he transitioned to a job at a bank in Watertown. The retired sergeant first class settled in Adams when Fort Drum was still Camp Drum.     Capt. Elizabeth Chung, an intelligence officer with 1st Brigade Combat Team, was the guest speaker Aug. 27 at the Fort Drum Women's Equality Day observance. A 2010 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Chung had wanted to become a human intelligence officer in the Marine Corps. At the time, females were not allowed in that career field, and so she cross-branched to the U.S. Army during her senior year at the academy. Since then, the Marine Corps has integrated females into that community.
