The second helicopter was able to land safely; however, the other crashed to the ground and caught fire. While this training scenario did not really happen, emergency responders from Fort Drum and the surrounding communities treated the incident as if it were real, putting their skills to the test.

    FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- The 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (LI) was inactivated during a late morning ceremony Thursday on Fort Drum's Sexton Field. The atmosphere was one of solemnity as approximately 2,500 Soldiers -- representing all six of the battalions making up the Spartan Brigade -- lined up for the last time in their 10-year history. The Soldiers bearing their unit colors, also known as guidons, along with the commanders and command sergeants major representing those units marched forward and came together in the foreground, behind the group bearing the Spartan Brigade's colors.

Typically, Soldiers receive assignments to multiple duty stations throughout their careers. Only a few have an opportunity to remain in the same duty station, let alone the same unit for more than a few years. Only eight Soldiers have had the distinction of participating in all four Spartan Brigade deployments to Afghanistan.

These veterans, representing the 31st Infantry Regiment Association, traveled to Fort Drum because 4-31 Infantry is the last active battalion of the regiment. During their visit, participants had a scheduled itinerary chock full of meet and greets, as well as a tour of Fort Drum and trips to Sackets Harbor to view the War of 1812 Battleground and Alexandria Bay for a boat tour and stop at Boldt Castle.

Then they were shipped to Seoul to start on-the-job training, and they were on their own. A twist of fate ensured Janssen would never have to find out what it would be like to grow up alone. When he was 10 years old, an American family from Nebraska made the decision to adopt him and change his life.
