  • Army, Air Force collaborate on C-130 dirt strip landing at Fort Drum

    The roar of engines and a cloud of dust filled the air April 25 as a large cargo plane touched down in a remote area of Fort Drum's training area. As part of a training mission conducted by aviators from the 103rd Airlift Wing of the Connecticut Air National Guard, the C-130 "Hercules" aircraft became the first to land on the Belvedere Flight Landing Strip in about a decade. Over the past few years, the 3,700-foot-long, 80-foot-wide runway has been repaired, flattening the surface in preparation for the training mission.

While Fort Drum's physical therapists do use techniques that manipulate the body and help to stretch injured muscles, their primary role is to educate Soldiers so that they are active participants in their own recovery, said Capt. Danny Harris, chief of physical therapy at Conner Troop Medical Clinic.

The challenge consisted of 46 kilometers of cycling, 15 kilometers of running and 10 kilometers of rowing, adding up to a total of 71 kilometers.

Edgar Navarro, food service specialist with the 7th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, practiced classical cuts on vegetables with a focus so razor-sharp that he barely acknowledged the banter of his teammates. The tourné-cut potato is shaped like a seven-sided football, flat on the ends, and measures two inches long and three-fourths in diameter. Navarro used his fingers to size it right, because rulers or tape measures are not allowed at the 41st Military Culinary Arts Competitive Training Event.

    Fort Drum is known, and feared, for its often harsh winters. That is part of the reason Fort Drum was classified as a zone seven (arctic) base in early 2015. The change opened doors to new extreme cold-weather clothing and equipment for Soldiers as well as respect within the arctic community. It also led to Fort Drum hosting the 2016 Extreme Cold Weather Symposium, Jan. 26-28. The symposium is in its fourth year, typically held at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, and focusing on the needs of Soldiers stationed there.

Sgt. Maj. Wardell B. Turner, 48, from Nanticoke, Md., was assigned to Headquarters, U.S. Army Garrison, Fort Drum, N.Y., before deploying to Afghanistan in late 2013 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Turner was killed Nov. 24, 2014, when his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device.
