The oldest of the U.S. Armed Services, the Army was established by the Continental Congress in 1775 and later became a military department of the U.S. federal government under the Constitution, enacted in 1789.     Driving around JBM-HH, you may have noticed gardens planted in depressions and medians. These are examples of bioretention areas, where stormwater runoff flows and slowly settles into the ground instead of being carried directly to stormwater sewers. Stormwater in sewers flows directly to streams and rivers without filters or treatment. As a result, pollutants in the stormwater, including nutrients, chemicals, sediment, bacteria and trash, also end up in our local streams and rivers and ultimately affect water quality in the Chesapeake Bay.

Sean Sullivan breaks the finishing tape of the opening Marine Corps Community Services Henderson Hall Semper Fit Oohrah Run Series race, The Spring Salute 5K, the morning of April 15 on the Henderson Hall portion of Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall. Sullivan completed the course in a time of 17 minutes and 17 seconds. The women's winner was Lisa Hamp in 20:18. A total of 80 runners started the opening of the Semper Fit race series.     After nearly a decade and a half of war, service members and their spouses are likely familiar with general powers of attorney. The most common type of power of attorney is a durable, general power of attorney. This document transfers nearly every legal right a person has to another individual. Durable means the document survives even if you are incapacitated for some reason (e.g. in a coma in a hospital). Even though a durable power of attorney is what is likely provided to a trusted person during a deployment, it might not be the best power of attorney for everyone who deploys.

    The 2015 Major League Baseball season marks the 10th anniversary of the Washington Nationals. My first Nats game was July 7, 2005, during their inaugural season. They played the New York Mets in front of 44,492 fans at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. Brad Wilkerson (my all-time favorite Nat), Matt Cepicky (who?) and the flat-brimmed Chad Cordero, among others, played in what turned into an 11-inning loss.

Easter Sunrise Service - The annual Easter Sunrise Service hosted by the Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall commander will be held April 5 at the Memorial Amphitheater in Arlington National Cemetery. The non-denominational service will begin with a prelude by the United States Army Band "Pershing's Own" at 6:15 a.m. The service is scheduled to begin with a call to worship at 6:30 a.m. This year's Easter sermon will be delivered by Maj. Gen. Howard Stendahl, chief of chaplains, United States Air Force. An interpreter for the hearing impaired will be provided.
