FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. -- With the opening of five new homes on Fort Huachuca, Soldiers and families stationed here now have more available housing options. Mountain Vista Communities opened the new homes in Coronado Village neighborhood with a ribbon cutting during a grand opening ceremony March 30. Representatives from the Department of the Army, Fort Huachuca, R.L. Workman Homes, LLC and Michael's Military Housing were on hand for the celebration.

It takes a gutsy individual who thrives on adrenalin rushes to take on this role, a potentially dangerous one in which a sudden wind and the wrong conditions can cause an individual to make a deadly plunge. Now, envision an even more specialized role in which an individual climbs a ladder to the top of a gigantic wind turbine to inspect and clean the blades and assure they are in proper working order before rappelling down its shaft, inspecting it along the way. It happened on Fort Huachuca, March 15, when Fort Huachuca's gigantic wind turbine was inspected and cleaned, making it one step closer to being put into operation.

FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. -- Military representatives from around the country came together in Sierra Vista this week, during the 2011 Joint Interoperability Conference, to share insight and increase their understanding on the interoperability issues faced by today's joint warfighter. The three-day event, which began on Tuesday, is being hosted by the Joint Interoperability Test Command on Fort Huachuca and co-sponsored by the local chapters of the Southern Arizona Chapter of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association and the International Test and Evaluation Association Huachuca Chapter. The conference is being held at the Windemere Hotel and Conference Center, and wraps up today.

FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. - Current All-Army head coach Basheer Abdullah hasn't put forward a losing team in his 14-year career, a remarkable feat considering the unpredictable nature of the combat sport. Abdullah will shoot for a 15th team title and his last, at the Armed Forces championship at Lackland, Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. After 20 years as both a top-tier Army boxer and coach, Abdullah recently announced his retirement during the All-Army camp, here.

FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. -- Spc. Jeffery Spencer is headed to the 2012 Olympic trials, and he is going to win because it is his destiny. The pundits certainly agree, the five-time All-Army boxing standout and current national champion is ranked number one in his weight class by USA boxing. Every other 178 pound boxer in the Army seems to agree; Spencer will be unopposed in his weight class at this year's All-Army tournament. His coaches also agree. When "The Fort Huachuca Scout" asked to interview a boxer who could make it to London in 2012, they instinctively pointed to him.

FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. -- Two Soldiers who happened to be at the right place at the right time received an award for coming to the aid of an accident victim last fall. Company B, 305th Military Intelligence Battalion, presented Army Achievement Medals to Pvt. Stephen Jackson and Pvt. Christopher Morris, Jan. 6, for assisting an accident victim at the Intersection of State Route 90 and State Route 80. The single-vehicle accident, which occurred Oct. 16, 2010, left both the car and driver stranded 100 feet up a mountain.

FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. -- Due to the efforts of Fort Huachuca's Environmental and Natural Resources Division, a rare plant, the Huachuca water umbel, can now be found in three more sites along the San Pedro River. The plant, which looks like grass, is an herbaceous, semi-aquatic perennial with bright green leaves that are hollow and grow straight up from creeping roots. The leaves are often one to two inches high, but may reach up to eight inches in favorable conditions. In the late 90s, it was listed as "endangered" under the Endangered Species Act. Since then, the ENRD has been working to recover the plant.

FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. -- Since 2003, Natale Salvatore Cataudella of Tucson has been looking for closure. His son, Sgt. Sean Cataudella, died August 30, 2003 in Balad, Iraq when the up-armored humvee he was driving hit an embankment and rolled into a canal. Cataudella was able to save the gunner, but drowned as a result of the accident. He posthumously received the Bronze Star for his actions, but Cataudella said no medal would ever replace his son. When Sgt. Cataudella returned to the United States he was not viewable, so his family never received any closure, until now.

Last December she received her kidney, and a new outlook on life. When Turner was 17 she was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease. FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. -- A few years ago, while poring through scrap metal at A & T Metals Recycling Center in Sierra Vista, an employee discovered a large brass plaque in the scrap yard. It appeared to have a connection to the U.S. Army. Suspecting the plaque may have been stolen, the business owner contacted the Cochise County Sheriff's office in Bisbee to report the find. Sgt. Gene Wheeler got the case and determined there was no report of the item having been stolen.

Julie Eddings, health systems specialist for the Oregon Air National Guard, contacted her sister, Spc. Jean Stivers, a medic with Company A, 309th Military Intelligence Battalion, and asked her if the battalion could spare any of their three combat medics to assist with training for an upcoming Patriot 10 mission. Approval, which consisted of a verbal agreement between the 309th MI Battalion and the Oregon Air National Guard, was granted the middle of June.

FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. -- Soldiers on Fort Huachuca now have a critical training tool to familiarize them with proper response in the event of High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle rollovers. It is the Humvee Egress Assistance Trainer. The HEAT is a Humvee designed to roll 180 degrees, and is used to simulate a rollover in theater. Fort Huachuca received the HEAT trainer a few years back, but before use a building had to be constructed around the device. After that, personnel had to be hired and then certified to operate the system.

FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. -- A new program is underway on Fort Huachuca to handle strays, aggressive dogs, cats, and other domestic animals, and get the animals back to their owners. Fort Huachuca's 18th Military Police Detachment is now in charge of the Stray Animal Facility, Building 30015. The MP's new section took over the program in the beginning of April. Prior to that, stray or aggressive animals were picked up by the MP's customs section, but the program was not run 24 hours, 7 days a week as it is now.

Earning the title of 'NCO of the Year for 2010' was Staff Sgt. James Becker, representing the 1st Signal Brigade, Korea; and earning the title of 'Soldier of the Year for 2010' was Spc. Brian Williams, representing the 21st Signal Brigade, Fort Detrick, Md.

The radio station is available all the time via the internet, on- and off- government access computers. Army Community Services held Military Spouse Appreciation Night at the Thunder Mountain Activity Centre. The event is held annually each May across Army installations to say "thank you" to spouses who unconditionally support their Soldiers.

FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz.-- About 5,000 people attended more than 60 exhibits during Fort Huachuca's Safety Day, Thursday, in Barnes Field House. The event is designed to teach the public about various safety aspects such as how to use a fire extinguisher and different community programs. Attendees were also welcome to have their vision checked and given the opportunity to drive a golf cart while wearing goggles that gave the illusion of what it's like to drive while under the influence of alcohol.

FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. -- About a month ago Staff Sgt. Daniel Arizmandi, a drummer for the 36th Army Band, was heading to his mailbox with his dog, Vato, at his side, when he heard yelling. "As I'm closing the mailbox, I hear a lady screaming hysterically," he explained. "At first it sounded like someone was just playing around, but then it started sounding serious." As the young sergeant turned his head, he saw a woman running toward him holding a baby. The baby, 1-year-old Blanca Amill, was choking.
