    Command Sgt. Maj. Sam K. Young was welcomed by First Army in a change of responsibility ceremony held today at the Rock Island Arsenal's Heritage Hall. Young accepted the responsibility as the unit's senior enlisted leader from Lt. Gen. Michael S. Tucker, First Army commander. He replaced Command Sgt. Maj. Jesse L. Andrews Jr., who has served since October 2010. A command sergeant major is the senior enlisted leader and advisor to the commander. Young will provide counsel and input for all matters pertaining to the health, welfare and discipline of all First Army Soldiers.

But deployed troops have to know how to defend their bases. This epic battle in the fictitious country of Atropia played out for nine days on the largest stage the U.S. Army offers for command exercises at Fort Leavenworth's Mission Training Complex and is only the third and largest Warfighter conducted since 9/11.

    McGREGOR RANGE, N.M. -- As part of their training before deploying in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Army Reserve engineers from Pennsylvania recently completed a new Mine-Resistant, Ambush-Protected vehicle drivers training course here. Soldiers in the 333rd Engineer Company from Reading, Pa., are being trained here by 3rd Battalion, 364th Engineer Regiment, Task Force Rampant, 5th Armored Brigade, Division West, before deploying to Afghanistan. To complete the MRAP drivers training course, the horizontal construction company improved a roadway through McGregor Range to enhance training and improve vehicle safety.

    FORT BLISS, Texas -- It's a tradition that began in another time, and another military conflict. Since the late 1960s, every Memorial Day weekend the staff of the Fort Bliss National Cemetery and hundreds of local volunteers have placed a miniature American flag in front of every tombstone in the cemetery. Today, that's 52,000 tombstones, covering 82 acres. But, with the help of about 1,000 volunteers, including 28 Soldiers and Family members of 2nd Battalion, 363rd Regiment, Task Force Black Scorpion, 5th Armored Brigade, Division West, the placing of the flags Saturday morning took only about two hours.
