  • Medal of Honor recipient receives promotion to colonel -- 30 years after retirement

    Retired Lt. Col. Bruce Crandall was promoted April 15 to the rank of colonel in a ceremony at the AAAA convention in Fort Worth, Texas. Crandall was hailed by Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Peter Chiarelli as a "decorated Soldier, a combat veteran, an expert pilot, a leader, a patriot, and a great American." The ceremony was unique, Chiarelli said, because Crandall's promotion came more than 30 years after his retirement. In Feb. 2007 Crandall received the Medal of Honor for actions during the Battle of la Drang, in the Viet Nam conflict. Crandall piloted an unarmed helicopter on more than 20 missions, flying into enemy fire to bring supplies to Soldiers and evacuate the wounded. Crandall was portrayed in the movie "We Were Soldiers" by actor Greg Kinnear. The movie is based on the book "We Were Soldiers Once ...and Young".
