In the same year, the Army entered an agreement with the National Institute of Mental Health to find out why. The Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center held its 2009 Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony inside the Presidio of Monterey chapel due to rainy weather. A smaller tree was lit inside during the observance but the outside tree was also lit up for the participants when they departed the chapel. Col. Sue Ann Sandusky, the commandant of the DLIFLC, officially welcomed all and was assisted by the younger attendees in turning the lights on.

When students of Pashto grew tired of having their seven-pound dictionary give them mistranslations of words they looked up, they found a simple solution - they wrote their own program that would handle multiple entries for several meanings of the same word. "We got tired of the dictionary's never being accurate and constantly getting us in trouble in class," said Lance Cpl. Lauren Kohls, who has been studying the language for five and a half months and has the highest listening score in the class.

ASEP launches life-long careers for military spouses

To date, 57,600 spouses of Soldiers have been hired for positions at one of the 31 Fortune 500 corporations who have joined forces with the Army Spouse Employment Partnership. This includes the 15,647 spouses hired this year. As of this October, eight more corporations, including Wal-Mart Stores Inc., joined forces with ASEP, bringing the total number of corporate partners to 39.

The U.S. Army, Fort Ord Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Office at the former Fort Ord conducted a Prescribed Burn in the old impact area on Nov. 16. The Army mobilized helicopters and other contract fire-fighting equipment to burn Unit 19 which contains about 196 acres.
