    PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - World War II veteran Emanuel "Manny" Avila hadn't even finished high school when he was inducted into the Army in 1944 and sent to train in Monterey. The Army wanted him to join the horse cavalry but he requested the mechanized cavalry instead because according to him "in the horse cavalry the horse comes first and Soldier second and it's much easier to replace a Soldier."

    After a Spirit Dinner at the Cadet Mess, the Black Knights led the Corps of Cadets out of Washington Hall and onto Daly Field for a Spirit Rally and Bonfire Dec. 9. The game ball was handed to the captain of the West Point Marathon Team who led his teammates out of West Point for a more-than-170-mile run to Philadelphia.

That is a charge I take on wholeheartedly, delivering programs and services that help Soldiers and Families thrive.
