PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - World War II veteran Emanuel "Manny" Avila hadn't even finished high school when he was inducted into the Army in 1944 and sent to train in Monterey. The Army wanted him to join the horse cavalry but he requested the mechanized cavalry instead because according to him "in the horse cavalry the horse comes first and Soldier second and it's much easier to replace a Soldier."

On the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month of 1918 Allied nations and Germany signed an armistice which essentially put an end to a conflict that cost the lives of over 10 million military personnel on both sides in the "Great War."

ARLINGTON, Va. - A fundamentally different fiscal reality. We will be hearing some variation of that phrase from Army leaders for a long time to come. The Army's budget is smaller than it has been in previous years, and it will get smaller still. However, a different fiscal reality does not change the reality of what we owe to Soldiers and Families for their service and sacrifice. The Army's commitment to Soldiers and Families remains as strong as ever.

Competition for Army's top marksmen set for March

The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, in conjunction with the Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Benning, will host the 2011 U.S. All-Army Small Arms Championships March 19-26. The competition is open to all Soldiers of any rank in the entire Army formation, including West Point and college ROTC cadets, Army Reservists and National Guardsmen. The All-Army Matches consist of Small Arms Firing Schools, Excellence-in-Competition Matches, rifle and pistol matches, and special combined-arms combat matches.
