Brain food: Service members serve up Breakfast for the Brain

MONTEREY, Calif. -- Soldiers from the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center are among those serving up "brain food" for local children during Saturday morning tutoring sessions at the Naval Postgraduate School. The "Breakfast for your Brain" program provides educational presentations and one-on-one tutoring for local children in first grade through high school.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. -- Presidio of Monterey ranked #1 among all Army garrisons in "Performance Triad" health behaviors -- sleep, activity and nutrition -- according to the Army's 2015 Health of the Force report. Presidio of Monterey service members ranked first in activity (84.6 of 100 points), first in nutrition (74.6 of 100), and second (71.3 of 100) in sleep behavior, according to the study.
Monterey military children run "across the country" to prepare for fun run

Students at Marshall Elementary School in Seaside, California have run "across the country," running enough collective miles to travel a route from Monterey Bay to Boston Harbor. The school is located on Ord Military Community at the Presidio of Monterey - an Army installation headquartered in Monterey, California. Many of the students are also training participate in a community 3K fun run with their parents in April.

Non-profit organization "Birdies for the Brave" provided complimentary tickets to service members assigned to the Defense Language School Foreign Language Center, located at the Presidio of Monterey in Monterey, Calif. The tour also hosted a military appreciation day during its mid-tournament "Celebrity Shootout" Feb. 10, 2016.

Presidio upgrades critical to defense language training mission

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Sacramento District manages construction on several major projects at the Presidio of Monterey in Monterey, Calif. The program incorporates the latest energy and water conservation technologies in order to operate more efficiently and in a sustainable, environmentally friendly manner. Most recently, the Corps broke ground on a new dining facility March 17, 2014, that is designed to feed up to 1300 personnel over a 90 minute period. The Corps is also constructing a new general instruction building for the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center and is renovating the school's cultural center. Both projects will be completed August 2014.

Language fluency is only one the many tools a Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center linguist possesses. They will also leave the Presidio of Monterey with a unique knowledge and insight into the local culture of their language of study, including its social structure and mores, spiritual beliefs, traditions and symbols. Eighteen DLIFLC students spend a day in a typical Afghan home, immersed in Afghani culture, language and social structure.
