8th TSC's Best Warrior Competition finds the best of the best

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii-- It's 3 a.m. on a Tuesday on Oahu, Hawaii. Shops are closed and the highways empty. Bakeries haven't begun making their morning bread and coffee will go unbrewed for another two to three hours. The island is asleep. It's 3 a.m. on a Tuesday on Oahu, Hawaii, and it's time to fight! Four Soldiers and four noncommissioned officers from 8th Theater Sustainment Command came together to compete against each other in the 8th TSC's Best Warrior Competition, Apr. 23 -- 26, at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

PITI, Guam-- The Soldiers of the "Never Daunted" battalion volunteered their time and efforts to impact the local community by cleaning up a local park in Piti, Guam, Apr. 13. The idea for the project came from a local Eagle Scout, James Cook, who wanted to clean up Santos Memorial Park, a park that had debris, overgrown trees, and pavilions in need of painting. It was important to him to ensure joint efforts from the Army, Navy, Boy Scouts, Mayor of Piti, and local villagers.

26th Concrete Detachment helps to preserve aviation history

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii-- The 26th Concrete Detachment, 84th Engineer Battalion, 130th Engineer Brigade, constructed two concrete pads on Wheeler Army Airfield these past two weeks to hold museum aircraft pieces for the joint 25th Combat Aviation Brigade and the Tropic Lightning Museum Memorial. Prior to construction, the helicopters were sitting on an improvised arrangement of garden cement blocks. The deputy commander of the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade highlighted the importance of these pads to his organization.

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii-- A nervous chatter filled the air in the early morning, Apr. 12, as officers of the 45th Special Troops Battalion, 45th Sustainment Brigade, waited for their turn to jump into the first official Crossfit competition. Some were chomping at the bit to start the exercise circuit. Others were more hesitant. "It been about a year," said Warrant Officer Ebony Campbell, a human resources technician with the unit, "so it's been a while. It was challenging, but the exercises were good and everyone had a good time."

She knows how to delegate authority, but is always ready to step up and handle any situation. When in need, everyone around knows they can count on Sgt. Phillis White. Because of what she calls "normal, everyday activities," White has recently been nominated for Outstanding Community Service Award for her constant commitment to the students and teachers at Webling Elementary School and her dedication to the Soldiers of the 8th Special Troops Battalion, 8th Theater Sustainment Command.

It's hot, the sun's not even up yet and it's the weekend. Given a choice, most people would still be in bed with the air conditioning on. And then there are those few, those crazy few, who do otherwise in a grand fashion. Running marathons and half marathons in a combat theater isn't a new phenomenon. The challenge may be unconventional given time or space constraints, but marathons appear on the calendar with predictable regularity. For instance, two posts on the outskirts of Jalalabad in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan, each hosted a marathon over the April 27-28 weekend.

Hayes, a mechanic who deployed with the 82nd Airborne Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team to Afghanistan in 2012, said that the first time he had to rely on his training to righten a flipped armored vehicle, everything worked exactly as he had trained.

FORT HOOD, Texas -- Competitions are commonplace in society. People sit and watch, for hours at a time, events ranging from professional boxing to American Idol. The United States Army, going back for generations, has also had competitive events for Soldiers to test their wits and abilities against their peers. First Army Division West holds to this tradition. Last week, Division West held its third Noncommissioned Officer and Soldier of the Year Best Warrior Competition here. During an awards ceremony April 25, Spc. Michael Martin, a motor transport operator and unit armorer with the 402nd Field Artillery Brigade at Fort Bliss, Texas, was named Division West Soldier of the Year.

Capt. (Dr.) Chelsea Brundage ran her 32nd marathon last week, the Boston Marathon. The senior resident in Walter Reed Bethesda's Physical Medicine and Readiness department aspired to run the event for years and finally qualified for this year. Her biggest regret was not being able to help the victims injured by two explosions that went off near the finish line -- about 10 minutes after she completed the race.
